A little story to take, treasure and tell
The oldest date related to the monastery is 1594, and it is engraved on a bell of the monastery. The monastery was probably founded during the Venetian occupation by a feudal lord known as Prevelis.
When the Turkish occupied Crete in 1649, they destroyed several church buildings and sites, among them this monastery. It was later rebuilt.
The Monastery has and extraordinary history due to the active and leading involvement of its fellow monks in national endeavours for freedom and education.
The Preveli monastery was a safe harbour and point of escape for many British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers during World War II and the Battle of Crete.
In commemoration, Australia Corporal Geoff Edwards settled in a seaside spot in Margaret River, Western Australia and called it 'Prevelly'.
