Standing on the top of the Corcovado Mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park, overlooking Rio de Janeiro is this monumental statue, Christ The Redeemer (Cristo Redentor). It is a cultural icon in Brazil, and a global symbol of hope and peace.

A little story to take, treasure and tell

This Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Rio De Janeiro in Brazil was created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with French engineer Albert Caquot.

Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida fashioned the face.

It was constructed between 1922 and 1931 and stands 30 metres high (excluding its 8-metre pedestal. The arms stretch 28 metres wide.

It is now one of the seven new wonders of the world alongside Machu Picchu, the Great Wall of China and the Roman Colosseum.

Did you know?

In 1969, Brazilian artist Gilberto Gil wrote a song inspired by the monument called 'That Hug' (Aquele Abraço).

Many debate whether the statue is a cross, or is it inviting a hug.
